Jeff Johnson
OWNER, CO-FOUNDER
Jeff Johnson is the Owner and Co-Founder of First State Firearms Training and has taught firearms safety and concealed carry instruction since 2008. Known for straightforward, no-nonsense teaching and humor, Jeff makes complex topics—especially laws and use-of-force considerations—easy to understand and apply.
Jeff was introduced to firearms at a young age and learned to shoot at five years old, an early foundation that shaped a lifelong respect for safe and responsible firearm use. That interest later developed into professional service when he enlisted in the Delaware Army National Guard at age 17.
While serving in the Guard, Jeff became an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor and NRA Range Safety Officer, and First State Firearms Training was established during his military service. He served six years, including a deployment to Iraq, where discipline, accountability, and sound decision-making were essential.
Following his military service, Jeff continued working in the firearms industry and expanded his instructional role. He also works part-time in a local gun store, giving him regular exposure to the questions, concerns, and misconceptions new firearm owners commonly have. Over the years, he has taught thousands of students, ranging from first-time firearm owners to experienced shooters seeking deeper legal understanding and confidence.
Jeff is known for his engaging, practical instruction style. Questions are encouraged, discussion is welcome, and the focus remains on responsible decision-making rather than memorization or theatrics. Whether someone is attending their first class or extending their training to additional states, Jeff’s goal is that every student leaves informed, capable, and confident in their responsibilities as a firearm owner.

Dave Johnson
CO-FOUNDER
Dave Johnson is a Co-Founder of First State Firearms Training and a 21-year U.S. Air Force veteran. He’s known for making firearm laws and permit procedures understandable through real-world examples and practical, step-by-step guidance.
Dave served 21 years in the United States Air Force, including more than five years stationed overseas, where consistency, procedure, and accountability were daily expectations. That extensive military background strongly influences his approach to firearms instruction, particularly when it comes to understanding laws, regulations, and the responsibilities that accompany firearm ownership.
Following his military service, Dave spent many years working in the firearms industry, gaining broad experience with firearms, equipment, and customer education. This background allows him to guide students not only through safe firearm handling, but also through the often-confusing procedural aspects of applying for permits and navigating state requirements.
Dave is an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor and NRA Range Safety Officer. He is especially well known for explaining legal concepts and real-world situations through practical anecdotes and situational examples, helping students understand how the law applies outside of a classroom setting.
Students frequently describe Dave’s instruction as clear, thorough, and relatable. His methodical teaching style and emphasis on process help students feel prepared—not only during class, but when taking the next steps after training.
